Reclaiming agricultural land in Egypt was a major source of wealth in the early 20th century. It was done through the transformation of swamp lands. The primary challenge was desalinating the soil, accomplished by leveling the terrain and constructing channels to flush it with water, thus removing the salt. Fathallah Pacha Barakat, the Minister of Agriculture at the time, pioneered the call for desert reclamation in modern Egypt. He posited that unlike the finite nature of swamp reclamation, the desert—constituting 96% of Egypt's land—offered an endless opportunity for development. Encouraged by this concept, Saad Zaghloul Pacha—Fathallah Pacha's uncle—urged him to lead by example. In 1905, Fathallah Pacha, began his trials to reclaim the desert. In November 2021 he purchased the Basateen Barakat Belbeis land (BBB) from Prince Adel Ayad. He used German/Swiss pumping technology to irrigate six hundred acres with Nile water. The first tree was planted by Saad Zaghloul Pacha himself. The second tree was planted by Zaghloul’s wife, Safiya Hanem. Both trees stand tall in the current BBB estates. They are proudly referred to as Saad’s Tree and Safeya’s Tree. After Fathallah Pacha's death, his youngest son, Mohammed Bey, an adept agricultural engineer, took over. Despite initial financial setbacks and his brothers' dwindling interest, leading them to consider selling the land, Bahieldin Pacha stepped in. He exchanged other fertile lands he had inherited to sustain the project. Bahieldin Pacha not only embraced but also expanded his father's vision. He combined desert reclamation with a social commitment to his workers. He upgraded his residence and offices on a fifteen-acre plot. He built a free dispensary for workers. He created an artificial lake, equipped with a bridge and an island, and fringed with lush trees. An engineer oversaw this lake, establishing a fish farm that supplied weekly meals to the local community. Bahieldin Pacha's dedication to worker welfare was just the beginning of his ambitious projects. He leveraged advanced science and human ingenuity. He firmly believed in achieving great feats and dismissed the word "impossible" as merely an excuse for complacency and failure. Under his leadership, BBB became a model of agricultural efficiency and profitability. Mango plantations thrived on what was once yellow sheets of sand. The veins of the mango planation is a network of underground water pipes. King Fouad â… took notice of BBB. He tasked his Director of Royal Estates, Zaki El Ibrachy Pacha, to replicate the success. Thus En Chase Royal Plantation was established. Despite the aggressive agricultural policies of Nasser, which dispossessed many landowners, the drive for land reclamation persisted. Today, the legacy of Fathallah Barakat Pacha and Zaki El Ibrachy Pacha lives on. Their descendants continue to purchase and reclaim land, embodying the founders lasting vision. What is more, this vision has been adopted by the Egyptian nation. The offspring of the family union of both Barakats and Ibrachies now owning ID.Farm represents a continuation of this legacy of desert reclamation, a testament not only to their heritage but also to the commitment to their nation.
